Australian producers of specialist or niche product are struggling to find workable and profitable pathways to theatrical releasing. This panel explores which films benefit from this approach, looking at examples of self-releasing, the strategies for planning and executing successful self-release – and the returns. This discussion also unpacks the producers’ toolkit for successful low-budget marketing and DIY distribution, and looks at ways to reduce the risk for producers, distributors and exhibitors.

The demand for VOD in Australia is growing, but the industry is looking for the right mix of price point, service and catalogue to find the sweet spot to achieve consumer buy-in, as well as deliver financial returns to producers and distributors. So what is the place of VOD in Australian industry and where should it sit in producers’ and distributors’ plans for their product? Our panel discusses how they see the returns stacking up for local content and our growing VOD industry.

MUTUALLY ASSURED SURVIVAL - AGENCIES, PRODUCERS DISTRIBUTORS AND EXHIBITORS

Changes need to come about in the mechanisms and structures that shape Australian screen businesses. Producers and distributors alike often struggle with the link between the offset and theatrical distribution, yet a better mechanism thus far has remained elusive. Similarly, we all want Australian audiences to be able to enjoy Australian films at the cinema and elsewhere, and yet any release needs to offer robust financial returns to all along the chain.

Our panellists each represent an arm of the film industry, and will discuss the shared challenges they face. They will look to the design and implementation of strategies to help assure robust and sustainable producing, distributing and theatrical sectors. This panel will explore new ways to work together, and to create new foundations for the future of the Australian screen industries.
